Beltangady, Aug 12: A meeting to review natural disasters was held under the leadership of chief minister B S Yediyurappa at Dharmasthala, Beltangady, on Monday, August 12.
Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyasa Kamath speaking in the meeting said that Boloor, Hoige Bazar, Kannoor, Jeppu Katpady, Jeppu, Kudroli, Bolar, Jeppinamogaru, Bokkapatna, Mangaladevi and other areas are close to the river.
He said, “River swells during monsoons and engulfs half kilometre of land. Therefore, residents in these areas are forced to abandon their houses and find shelter elsewhere. People who are affected by the floods are currently accommodated in gruel centres. As rains were heavy this year, people had to face more hardships. Therefore, it is necessary to construct a retaining wall at the river banks and solve problems faced by the residents.
“Dengue too was rampant in Mangaluru this time. BTV cameraman had died of dengue and you had announced a compensation of Rs 5 lac. As eight more people had died of dengue, compensation should also be announced for them too,” stated the MLA.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLAs in the district, deputy commissioner and officials of different departments were present.
