Beltangady, Aug 12: A meeting to review natural disasters was held under the leadership of chief minister B S Yediyurappa at Dharmasthala, Beltangady, on Monday, August 12.

Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyasa Kamath speaking in the meeting said that Boloor, Hoige Bazar, Kannoor, Jeppu Katpady, Jeppu, Kudroli, Bolar, Jeppinamogaru, Bokkapatna, Mangaladevi and other areas are close to the river.

He said, “River swells during monsoons and engulfs half kilometre of land. Therefore, residents in these areas are forced to abandon their houses and find shelter elsewhere. People who are affected by the floods are currently accommodated in gruel centres. As rains were heavy this year, people had to face more hardships. Therefore, it is necessary to construct a retaining wall at the river banks and solve problems faced by the residents.

“Dengue too was rampant in Mangaluru this time. BTV cameraman had died of dengue and you had announced a compensation of Rs 5 lac. As eight more people had died of dengue, compensation should also be announced for them too,” stated the MLA.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLAs in the district, deputy commissioner and officials of different departments were present.

Once the rain subsides no one will talk about it until next monsoon. This is age old problem faced by the people living along river banks. No one Govt. has put a solution in place. At least start protection wall from one area a year. soon we can resolve the issue with good engineering and construction support.

As the cabinet is not formed yet even fifteen days after CM Yedyurappa took an oath, handling and tackling the natural calamities happened due to heavy rain this and many people taking shelter in the temporary built shelter houses without any ray of hopes of their survival because they have lost all their properties, agricultural growths, houses and many other things due to heavy and torrential rain resulting devastating situation. As a Ekadaladhipathi CM Yedyurappa has to face many challenges single handedly in tackling the situations occurred due to heavy rain. Now he has to forget all his political ego, rivalry, enmity and should work in tandem taking everybody into confidence including his opponents.Holding various meetings, press meets, taking numbers gathered by the district administration does not serve the purpose. His main focus should be on rehabilitating the flood affected people at the earliest possible.

A real test for Yeddy & his troops. Set aside politics, hatred, bias & religion & unite in the spirit of team dedicated to alleviate the misery / suffering of affected people. God's fury must be taken seriously & try to interpret exactly what lessons He wants to teach us.
