Mangaluru: Charmadi Ghat road might take months to open for traffic

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 12: Charmadi Ghat road, which is one the important links between Dakshina Kannada district and the districts in Malnad and the plains, has suffered extensive damages this time. Therefore, it may take a couple of months for this road to be opened for vehicular traffic again.

The ghat road has suffered huge cuts at three to four places. Vehicles if allowed to move on the road, can jump 70 feet down at these spots. The administration may be able to clear the landslides and fallen trees in a few days, but repairing the road poses the greatest challenge, the officials say.

The bad news is that this stretch of the highway may take about two months to be repaired. Major work will be with regard to reconstruction of the road wherever parts of the road have been washed away or cut off.

The other ghat roads have also suffered immense damage this time. One hopes that they will sustain the additional vehicular traffic caused by the non-availability of Charmadi Ghat road for movement of people and goods till the road is reopened.

We should brace for similar extreme weather conditions in future partly due to global warming. Major changes are needed for roads running through the ghats. Similar to Char Dham project, there is need to for major changes to the existing roads besides building tunnels where possible. I would say, Sampaje, Shiradi, Charmadi, Agumbe, Hulikal and couple of other ghats roads in UK districts needs complete overhaul. Yes, the cost may run into few thousand crores to build a solid structure that can withstand nature's flurry. Otherwise, band-aid work will not survive and money spent goes through the drain.

Good point. Many new road projects for instance in the US have toll charges as building quality roads requires quite a bit of money. So, naturally, if private players are involved, then, there will be toll charges. I think, public/government-private partnership may work well for some road projects in India if it is managed well.

Nash, who is in charge of National highways for the last 6 years? What is their contribution.

Last week I drove through SHiradi ghat which is in pathetic conditions with plenty of potholes. Do U want to blame Congress for that.

What is GAdkari doing. GadKari & our previous congress PWD minister visited SHiradi ghat & both again proposed for Tunnelling road the idea conceived by Oscar. How far tunnelling of ShirAdi ghat has progressed.

Such an important link is shut for two months. OMG.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on a show and Jane Clayson asked her: "How God let something happen like this ?" (regarding Hurricane Katrina).
Anne Graham gave this extremely profound and insightful answer. She said, "I believe God is deeply
saddened by this, just as we are, but for years, we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our govts and to get out of our lives. Now, being the gentleman he is, I believe he has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us his blessing and his protection, if we demand He leave us alone ?"
