Chief minister Yediyurappa spoke to the scribes in his residential office 'Krishna' in the city on Saturday and said that North Karnataka, Coastal region and Malnad areas of the state are severely affected with flood and landslides due to the incessant rains. The state has not seen such devastating flood in the last 45 years. Yediyurappa said that he has sent a proposal to release Rs 3,000 crore to the central finance minister for immediate relief work in the state.

According to the latest information, 24 people have died in the state. In Kodagu, two people died of landslide. Rs five lac compensation is being given to the families of the dead. The land area of undivided district of Dakshina Kannada, which is about 100 to 150 km between the Arabian Sea and Western Ghats is devastated to an extent that is unheard of in the past. The rural areas of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi distircts are the worst affected. The Western Ghat Plateau area of Beltangady taluk like Didupe, Malavanthige, Neriya, Aanadka, Ermayi and Badaje have virtually turned into large areas of water bodies. Most of the rural parts of Mangaluru and Bantwal taluk were submerged till the late night of Saturday, August 10. Some parts of Sullia was also flooded. Landslide is reported in Subramanya. The amount of rain, in the worst affected northern Karnataka region, has reduced on Saturday. But the fury of flood is still continuing. However, the fury of rain is continuing in Chikkamagalur, Malnad, Mangaluru and Udupi areas, the road connection from and to these places is badly affected. The flood is continuing in areas of Hassan, Chamarajnagar and Old Mysuru areas.

According to CM Yediyurappa, it will take at least a month to assess the exact loss that is caused by the flood. Once the assessment is done, steps will be taken to provide relief from the state as well as the central governments. He has requested entrepreneurs and corporate houses to donate as much as possible.

I pray that these floods give abundant work to our politicians and MP/MLA to work for the people rather than washing dirty linin of political parties. This also reminds us of the wagers of nature when people try to destroy it in the name of development. No amount of money given by the government or private parties can absolve us of the loss and the suffering of the people
