Bengaluru, Aug 11: The state government has declared 80 taluks in 17 districts of the state as affected with flood. Chief minister Yediyurappa spoke to the scribes in his residential office 'Krishna' in the city on Saturday and said that North Karnataka, Coastal region and Malnad areas of the state are severely affected with flood and landslides due to the incessant rains. The state has not seen such devastating flood in the last 45 years. Yediyurappa said that he has sent a proposal to release Rs 3,000 crore to the central finance minister for immediate relief work in the state.
According to the latest information, 24 people have died in the state. In Kodagu, two people died of landslide. Rs five lac compensation is being given to the families of the dead. Further two days of red alert is declared in the district of Kodagu as there is a possibility of more than 204 mm of rain till August 12. Eight people, who went missing after a hillock collapsed in Thora village of Virajepet taluk of Kodagu district, are still not traced.
The land area of undivided district of Dakshina Kannada, which is about 100 to 150 km between the Arabian Sea and Western Ghats is devastated to an extent that is unheard of in the past. The rural areas of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi distircts are the worst affected. The Western Ghat Plateau area of Beltangady taluk like Didupe, Malavanthige, Neriya, Aanadka, Ermayi and Badaje have virtually turned into large areas of water bodies. Loss is estimates to be nearly Rs 125 crore.
Most of the rural parts of Mangaluru and Bantwal taluk were submerged till the late night of Saturday, August 10. Some parts of Sullia was also flooded. Landslide is reported in Subramanya. In the district of Udupi, the rural areas of Kollur, Kundapur, Kaup and Byndoor are worst affected. All the roads that connect Kundapur with Malnad are not accessible as most of them are either inundated or collapsed.
The level of water in the KRS dam in Mysuru, which was just 84 feet five days ago, has reached an alarming 115 feet on the evening of Saturday, August 10. The maximum limit of the reservoir is 124.80 feet and is expected to hit the level on the evening of Sunday, August 11.
The amount of rain, in the worst affected northern Karnataka region, has reduced on Saturday. But the fury of flood is still continuing. However, the fury of rain is continuing in Chikkamagalur, Malnad, Mangaluru and Udupi areas, the road connection from and to these places is badly affected. The flood is continuing in areas of Hassan, Chamarajnagar and Old Mysuru areas.
According to CM Yediyurappa, it will take at least a month to assess the exact loss that is caused by the flood. Once the assessment is done, steps will be taken to provide relief from the state as well as the central governments. He has requested entrepreneurs and corporate houses to donate as much as possible.
