Mangaluru, Aug 10: Red alert has been issued in Dakshina Kannada for the next 48 hours. The district is expected to receive heavy rains ranging from 150 mm up to 200 mm.
A press note from deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil states, landslides have occurred in many places due to heavy rains and people living in areas severely affected by rains and floods are being evacuated and shifted to relief camps.
The Charmadi and Shiradi Ghat roads are closed for traffic. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into sea as the waves are 3.5 to 4 metres high.
The Netravathi River has touched danger level 8.5 metre in Bantwal and is at 31.4 metre in Uppinangady while the danger mark is 31.5.
The Kumaradhara River has crossed danger mark in Uppinangady and is flowing at 26.5 metre. The Gundya River near Disha Power Project is flowing at 5.20 metre while the danger level is 5 metre.
Those who are affected due to natural calamities are shifted to relief camps. Those who are collecting relief materials for the rain and flood affected people can deposit the same at KPT Mangaluru.
As of August 10, in Mangaluru, 18 gruel centres are opened and 102 families consisting 469 members are given shelter. In Bantwal, 28 families consisting 55 people are housed in two centres. Beltangady is most affected and 108 families consisting 517 people are housed in five centres. In Puttur, the two gruel centres has 12 families and 66 people. In Moodbidri and Kadaba, one centre each has been opened. But no one is staying in it as of now. Sullia has two centres, housing eight families of 22 members.
Two NDRF teams consisting 13 people each are helping in relief work in Bantwal and Beltangady.
Fire service teams are formed in Mangaluru city and stationed in places such as Harekala, Ullal, Jappinamogaru, Uliya, Ranipura Road, Uliyabettu, Adoor and Polali.
In Bantwal taluk, two Coast Guard teams and in Ullal two teams are rendering their service.
Water level touches historic high at Netravati river
The torrential rainfall in the district during the last five days has continued on Saturday also. Netravati river called the lifeline of the district has taken the form of fury. As a result water has entered houses in Bantwal and those close to the river. More than 100 houses in Bantwal are inundated. The water level in Netravati river had reached 11.6 meters and 58 houses were inundated. The water level is a new record as the last time it reached was 11.4 metres back in 1974.
As it rained heavily in Beltangady and ghat section on Saturday, the flood water entered some areas in Bantwal taluk.
Ajilamagaru, Navur, Jakribettu, Kadeshivalaya, Baddakatte, V P Road, Kanchikarapete, Bastipadpu, Bhandaribettu, Nandarabettu, Brahmarakottlu and Barimaru Budoli road are drowned in water.
Deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, MLAs U T Khader, Rajesh Naik, Vedavyasa Kamath, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel among others were seen visiting the flood-hit areas.
