Rampur (UP), Aug 9: A Muslim woman residing in Rampur of Uttar Pradesh is being lauded for standing up against her husband and tearing a paper on which talaq was written three times, saying this system won’t work anymore.
On July 1, the woman’s husband had written talaq thrice on a piece of paper and handed it over to her. The woman then complained to Moradabad SP that she was often harassed for dowry and her husband gave her triple talaq. The couple was asked to visit the Nari Utthan Kendra counsellor.
At the centre, the counsellor Sandhya Rawat listened to grievances of the 52-year-old woman and her husband. It was here, the woman tore the ‘talaq’ paper in front of her husband after which he agreed to take her back.

“This act required courage. She made it clear that triple talaq system will not work. The entire scene of her tearing the paper was shot on mobile phone. We are planning to use this video to convince other couples who come with the same issue,” Rawat told media.
The couple married for 26 years have three children. Eleven years ago, the woman had lodged a complaint with the police against her husband for dowry harassment. However, the matter was resolved as both families intervened.
Talaq-e-biddat refers to the pronouncement of talaq three times by a Muslim man in one sitting to his wife resulting in an instant and irrevocable divorce. The Modi led NDA government had passed the historic triple talaq bill, which was passed in Rajya Sabha on July 30 this year. The bill states declaration of talaq-e-biddat in spoken, written or through SMS or WhatsApp or any other electronic chat illegal.
The counsellors at Nari Utthan Kendra say that Muslim women are now standing up for themselves, when their husbands declare Talaq-e-biddat. Fearing arrest, a few days back, a Muslim man named Mohammad Ali from Uttar Pradesh returned to his wife.
A Muslim man pronouncing instant triple talaq attracts a jail term of three years under the triple talaq law.
