Mangaluru-Dubai AI Express flight issue - Pilot not at fault: Air India sources

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (AM)

Mangaluru, Aug 9: Sources from Air India have said that the incident where passengers of Air India Express flight IX 814 flying from Dubai to Mangaluru were left stranded at Coimbatore airport, after the pilot reportedly left the flight after landing as he had finished his duty hours.

The incident had taken place on Thursday, August 8.

Explaining the entire situation, sources from Air India said that as the weather in Mangaluru was bad and it was likewise in nearby Kannur, Calicut and Kochi, the option left for the pilot was to divert the flight to Coimbatore where the weather was better. When the flight landed In Coimbatore, there was no engineer to dispatch the aircraft at 5 am. The only available engineer was expected to report at 8 am, which was well beyond the flight duty limitations of the pilots.

Hence, there was no other option than to arrange other pilots from either Calicut or Kochi.

While many of the passengers blamed Air India for their harrowing experience of waiting almost 12 hours, officials of the airline were on their toes trying to arrange for an alternate pilot. Hence, very clearly, the pilot flying the aircraft or Air India, were not at fault.

It may be recalled, the Dubai to Mangaluru flight was scheduled to arrive at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) at 4.25 am on Thursday, August 9. However, due to bad weather, it was diverted to Coimbatore airport. The flight finally touched down at Mangaluru International Airport at 3.00 pm on the same day.

Its really bad to see people blaming pilots for everything, one thing everyone has to understand is that pilots are bound to fly only limited hours as per the Civil aviation body Dgca , its better to be safe then to be in a dangerous situation , when a pilot makes a wrong decision we are here to blame, wen he makes a sound decision of diverting for safety he is blamed, its sad to see that blaming is the only option some people have got, its better to be in an airport then to have been in a unsafe situation guys , safety is the first priorty pilots have. Food and beverages should have been provided thats ultimately management issue as how they tackle it and not pilots. Have a great day everyone, let the peace prevail.

Passengers who reserved the tickets in that flight are guilty.
Passengers starved inside the flight without food and water are guilty.

Neither the management or pilot are guilty.

Budget airline charging Rs-30000 for one way ticket is not guilty but the passengers who reserved the tickets are guilty.

It's sad to see how no one understands hours of duty in India. A pilot can't fly beyond their stipulated flying hours, this is across the world and not something on the hands of air India.

A pilot also needs to rest. Stop blaming Air India for everything.

Besides no one in India cares about anyone and are ready to blame.

So it is not AirIndia's fault that people were left stranded with food and water? What are you trying to prove sitting there in US. Indians can be treated badly because according to you in India nobody cares about anyone?

Mr Raj, You are 100% right. In India only care about greediness, religion no one care for any one. God kept human in the first place of animal, but we Indians gone against God's rule and respect animal not human.

Raj New YOrk,I just support you with the arguement.Suppose the pilot if at all out of courtsy does it as people say and on the way something goes wrong, again people will blame him and AI for allowing him to fly.Only I dont unserstand by AI is,why when a aviation is operated, they should always have one person on alert to take up the problem and solve.By AI no engineers when emergency is there,no pilot ,no spare parts ,should wait for two days to bring from bla bla bla. Then please close down the shop and give off the key to someone.dont play with lives of people.

The passengers should claim compensation for all the hardships they faced. Air India always treats passengers like unwanted, as if they are flying free and the airline is doing them a favour.

It says AI staff was on their toes trying to solve the issue.... How long does ot take AI Management to figure that Engineer is not available for dispatch and alternative pilots are not available? I think approximately 2 minutes is enough. As soon as awareness that a plane is being diverted sinks in before the plane lands, cant the management figure out what is needed and make arrangements like food and beverages as well as accommodation if deemed necessary? And they say its not AI fault...

My family and I went through a similar situation a couple of years ago. The same flight was diverted to Calicut as visibility was poor at Mangalore. By the time the weather cleared, the crew had surpassed their allowable duty hours. The same flight got a new crew but it was converted to a domestic flight from Calicut to Mangalore. Hence we had to offload all our bags , get passport and immigration clearance at Calicut and check in again as a domsetic flight. But there was a further challenge ahead. What many passengers did not foresee was that duty Free liquor bottles bought from Dubai Duty Free could not be carried into the cabin as liquids above 100 ml are not permitted as standard flying rules. Without adequate packaging and identification, the passengers were forced to check in their duty free bottles with the hope they would not be broken on arrival at Mangalore.

It was definitely not the fault of the pilot. He had finished his duty hours and it was against the rules of DGCA for him to fly. The passengers should have understood that all this happened due to the bad weather condition, Air India Express could land at Mangalore International Airport.

Because it is an Low cost carrier and not a full service carrier like Jet Airways and Emirates.. People are smart enough to understand this and book tickets. After booking tickets on LCC they want all sorts of benefits which you get in FCC’s. LCC is a point to point travel service and nothing else. If you are a company, You cannot earn 20 Rs and spend 50 Rs.
