Ras Al Khaimah, Aug 8: A man on visit visa claiming to be a PHD, stood trial at Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) court on Wednesday, on charges of assault, robbery and posing as a police officer. He was arrested for allegedly spraying nerve gas on a group of men and stealing their mobile phones.

As reported in Khaleej Times, the victims said an Arab man approached them claiming to be a police officer and demanded that they show their ID cards. When the victims requested the Arab man to show his police ID, he allegedly sprayed nerve gas on them and robbed their mobiles.

The victims lodged a complaint with the RAK police, who in turn launched an investigation and managed to arrest the man, who confessed to the crime. The accused told the police that he was in 'very serious financial crisis' that he had no choice, but to steal. The accused was presented in front of RAK court, where he admitted to the charges of robbery, posing as a cop and attacking others with nerve gas.

In court, the accused asked the victims to forgive him and withdraw the case, saying that he was the 'breadwinner of his family' and he 'needed the money for an emergency situation back home'. He told the court that it was the first time that he was involved in such a crime, claiming that he was 'a respectable person with a PhD'. He said he came to the country on visit visa and stayed with some of his friends at Ras Al Khaimah, hoping that he could land a decent job. "I tried hard to find a job, but to no avail," he said. The court will announce verdict in the case later this month.
