Mangaluru bound Air India Express' pilot leaves flight after landing, passengers stranded

Daijiworld Media Network - Coimbatore (MS)

Coimbatore , Aug 8: In an incident that has occurred on Thursday, August 8, pilot of Air India Express flight IX 814 that was flying from Dubai to Mangaluru left the flight at Coimbatore airport after landing saying that his duty time was over.

The flight was supposed to reach Mangaluru International Airport at 4.25 am. However, due to bad weather it was diverted to Coimbatore airport. Once the flight landed at Coimbatore airport, the pilot left the flight saying that his duty hours were over. As per latest updates from one of the fliers, the passengers and crew inside the aircraft are waiting for the new pilot since 5 am. The passengers were  made to sit inside the aircraft and were not served even water or food since 5 am of Thursday, August 8.

Bit late ,but with all answers
    1) Now everyone can see the weather ,how worse it is and cok airport is closed .
2)In the pictures itself is clear they are distributing the food (sply last one )
3)Duty period is made with the prime motive for passenger safety because pilot suppose to get fatigued after long hours of flying.
    4) Before accepting the flight ,they check the block of flight with in regulated time.
5)Passenger were in the aircraft because immigration and customs officials were not allowing the passengers to leave it ,not the Airindia Express.
    6) Pilots also came,as a passengers to manglore not left the passengers.

I was in the flight and it was not pilots fault. They are bound by the aviation rules. The pilot was still willing to fly the plane if he was given the approval by aviation authority.

Going through many of the comments above all I can say is that "Ignorance cannot always be a bliss"
Pilot's Duty Time limits are laid down by DGCA of India for the safety of flights and the lives of precious human beings onboard it. Yes under certain circumstances like the one above it can be extended as per rules but even that extension has some limits. One cannot extend the duty time beyond a certain limit. Beyond that the crew is not authorized even though they may be physically capable plus and that is for the safety of the aircraft and it's passengers.
I suggest the passengers to be aware of the monsoons in India and, particularly this time, of the situation in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Pilots may be ready to risk their lives but I am sure they would not like to risk the lives of the passengers and rules are laid down by the DGCA to ensure this additionally.
I am sure the pilot being blamed by the readers above would have travelled on the same aircraft back to Mangaluru after having reported for duty the previous evening. While you relaxed in your seats during the flight he roughed it out to manage the flight, requirements of passengers, coordinated for permission from DGCA for his extension, kept a track of weather at Mangaluru, trying to calm the ignorant passengers. Under prevailing weather conditions and recent incidents with airlines in India I am sure the DGCA would have denied permission for their duty time extension specially because of Mangalore being classified as a difficult airport by DGCA (Pilos need special qualifications/training to fly from/to Mangalore) So he would have now coordinated for an additional set of pilots all the time trying to keep the passengers in picture of the situation.
Rather than blaming him please thank him for ensuring your safety even after the rukus you passengers created.

Totally agree with Adi. Most passengers dont realize or understand this point.

But again, AI (or any other airline) should have noted this and accordingly arranged for another pilot much before this flight lands. This is not the first time its happening and therefore, AI should have been alert to such conditions. They should monitor each flight and the pilots roster as well to avoid such situations. AI does not seem to learn from experience.

    People,

Its not Pilot fault, Pilot cannot fly more than certain number of hours specified by Pilot rules and regulation....if he flies beyond that without valid reasons, his Flying License will be suspended...

AI management should keep some Pilots as stand by in major airports...Coimbatore like Mangalore is a small airport, without Stand by Pilots....

So its nobody's fault here...but Passengers should be treated well...In US in such cases they are given bonus miles tickets, which they can use in future for free...

I don't expect that from AI, if they were that smart, they would not be bankrupt...

    ...Tak...Takk...

no they dont jump out of the plane. they are given duty in such a way that there is at least 2 or 3 hours left after landing... if the flight is a long haul there are spare pilots who fly along. Same with fuel. there are extra fuel in the plane specially for such situation, in case the fuel gets over they land in the nearest possible airport, re fuel and come back,

Lot of rules are laid down by international bodies that control the safety

AI express also cannot keep a pilot on standby in Coimbatore, because this was an unexpected diversion..

Pilot has done the right thing.Y should he risk his job by continuing flying after his duty hours are over?? As per reports the passengers were given food in Coimbatore airport. So stop blaming Air India Express or the pilots.

    Dear dinky,

What are you even talking? He is a pilot, not a waiter to serve food! And it's a diverted flight, no one planned for this that they will arrange food for the passengers. And coimbatore airport might not be handling a single diverted plane, there may be multiple planes which the airport has to handle! Whats more important here is the safety of the aircraft and passenger. That's what they did!

Pilots are not supposed to fly only for certain hours! Their "rest time" starts once the brakes on planes are applied. And they get only 13hours of rest between 2 flights (each flight has 4 sectors, that is they fly to 4 places continuously and then get rest for 13hrs). The 13hrs include the travel from the airport to hotel. And they have no sleep patterns. Sometimes they fly as early as 2am. So before making yours assumptions on this matter, know it. And also, the pilots are not paid extra for diverted flights and emergencies! :)

Every public sector company which is in Govt., control, were horrible in their attitudes earlier, since past 3-4yrs now added new feature of going berserk.

Alternative to this horrible plight of the common man, was private sector. Now, the Private Sector means only Adani, Ambani and probably Mahindra, rest all are fleeing from the onslaught due of Modi Govt., policies.

With 3,50,000job losses in Auto Sector, added to worsening condition of HAL, BEL, BHEL, Air India, Jet Airways, BSNL, MTNL, ONGC, King Fisher and so on to add, picture is just started. Our politicians are busy with self-promotions. Good luck India.

Pilot can use his discretion in extending his flight duty period, it is upto him/her. If he/she dosnt want to extend then he/she is still right. No one can force them 2 fly plane as it is safety concern for plane and all people in plane. If he/she flies plane beyond their duty hours then they invite stringent action from DGCA for risking plane and passengers life.
