Goa higher education bill introduced in assembly

Panaji, Aug 8: The state government introduced Goa State Higher Education Council (Amendment) Bill in the assembly on Tuesday. Once the bill is passed, the amendment will allow the council to co-opt members having expertise across fields, including persons from outside the state.

As of now, the act only allows five members to be nominated by the government, but does not mention if the members should be from the state or outside. The new amendment will be effect to clause (g) under subsection (2) of Section 3 of the bill, which reads: Fifteen members co-opted by the council, who are persons of scholarly pursuits, out of which minimum five should be from outside the state.

The bill states that the expenditure incurred is minimal, 'Roughly Rs 25 lac per annum would be needed'.
