Bengaluru, Aug 6: With the transfer order, just 47 days after taking charge as Bengaluru police commissioner, Alok Kumar has earned the tag of serving shortest tenure among his peers in Bengaluru city police.
Alok Kumar, who now holds the post of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), seemed visibly upset with regard to his transfer order. Speaking to reporters here, he said he will fight not for the post but for his dignity and honour.
On August 2, Friday, Kumar came to know about his transfer when the news started flashing on TV. He was in office at that time and in between a grievance meet. He waited for the official transfer intimation up to 5.45 pm. However, as the order did not come, he left for his official residence.
Meanwhile, ADGP Bhaskar Rao, who replaced Kumar, came to the commissioner’s office to take charge. However, he was caught in an awkward position when Kumar did not turn up and had to sign certificate of transfer of charge (CTC) in his absence.
Meanwhile, Kumar questioned on the hurry to take up-charge after official hours. “I was in my official residence. My home was not locked,” he pointed out.
Kumar also said that the transfer was embarrassing and a torture for him and his family, who had settled in the new residence just 20 days ago.
He highlighted that key positions in the police department remained the same during change of governments except some very sensitive departments.
Kumar suspects mafias like that of live bands, illegal clubs, builders or metre baddi joined hands with some people in the police department and put pressure on his transfer. “The mafias had a tough time during my tenure,” he said.
The handover is usually a scripted and formal affair. There is a customary handshake between the two officers and the ceremonial transfer of the baton.
However, the ceremony went awry with Kumar’s absence on Friday. “I was left with no option but to sign the CTC in his absence. It has never happened before to an incoming commissioner of police,” Bhaskar Rao had told media.
Kumar subsequently signed the CTC at 9 am on Saturday.
