Mumbai: Passengers stuck in Lokmanya Tilak railway station

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai (SR)

Mumbai, Aug 5: Hundreds of passengers were stranded at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) railway station as the railway tracks were flooded due to incessant heavy rainfall and Central Railway announced cancellation and diversion of many trains on Sunday.

The stranded passengers were offered tea and food packages from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Western Railway (WR) services between Vasai-Virar were suspended for several hours as the tracks were flooded, before resuming at reduced speeds after 2.35 pm.

As per IANS, Central Railway (CR) services were hit in some sectors like Kurla-Sion due to waterlogging on tracks, breaches in railway lines and landslides on outstation routes, while its suburban Harbour Line was paralysed.

Owing to boulders falling on railway tracks, the CR cancelled 18 trains, diverted three services and short-terminated seven long-distance trains at various points. Trains like the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express were stuck at Igatpuri since 4 am.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the intensity of rainfall will continue for the next 24 hours. BMC announced that schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed today to ensure that students are not put at risk due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
