Mangalore, May 30: A gang reportedly attacked a woman and her daughter living in Yedaneer village in the taluk on the night of Thursday May 28, with sharp weapons, before fleeing under the cover of darkness.
Padmavati (40) residing at Bairamoole, Yedaneer and Divya (16), her daughter, were admitted into a hospital in Mangalore with critical injuries. Allegedly, a gang led by Mohan Naik from Adoor that arrived at Yedaneer in a jeep at around 8.30 pm on Thursday, committed the said crime. It is said that the gang severed the power connection of the house, before launching an assault with lethal weapons. Padmavati has been inflicted wounds to her face and chest with a sword. She was unconscious when admitted into the hospital. Divya suffered severe injuries in her legs.
Their neighbours who rushed to the house of the duo after hearing their shouts for help, found Divya lying at the courtyard of her home while Padmavati was found in a pit near her home. A canful of acid was also recovered, which has been confiscated by the policemen.
The two lived at Adoor till recently and shifted to Bairamoole, Yedaneer thereafter. Padmavati's husband is said to be living separately. It is said, assaulter Mohan Naik used to visit the two frequently, but had not been seen here of late. Reasons for the murder attempt are not yet known. The town policemen have registered a case.
