Many BJP leaders in Goa not happy with party's decision of inducting 10 Congress MLAs

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji (SR)

Panaji, Jul 13: Not many senior BJP leaders are happy with the current political developments happening in the state, where ten former Congress MLAs were inducted into the party. While some of the leaders are of the opinion that the decision was taken in the interest of the party, many others feel party's interest should have been protected before taking any such decision.

As reported in TOI, a senior BJP leader Rajendra Arlekar, upset with the move, told the publication that the merger was ‘Congressisation’ of BJP. Arlekar said there was no discussion on induction of Congress MLAs into the party. “Karyakartas in general and public in particular are hurt with the move and now the party has to decide how it can come out of this situation. We cannot afford to have such a concoction in the party. How can we run the party if all are from other outfits? Those running the party should have pondered over this before arriving at any decision,” he said. "Those who are running the party have sidelined senior leaders and have not thought over before arriving at the decision."

Union minister of state for defence and senior BJP leader Shripad Naik said, “This issue should have been discussed at party level in the interest of the BJP.” When asked whether he was not informed in advance, Naik said he was in Delhi attending the parliament session. Laxmikant Parsekar, former chief minister of Goa, welcomed the decision of inducting Congress MLAs in the party and said it would strengthen the party and connect with all strata of society. “Party has now all types of public representatives."

Considering the Pramod Sawant-led coalition government was under no threat, the BJP’s gleeful embrace of the turncoats has also shaken the saffron party’s core supporters in the state. The more interesting fact is the MLAs like Babush Monserrate, the catalyst of the Congress exodus, and all given to slithering in and out of parties – from UGDP to BJP to Congress to GFP to Congress to BJP.

The new BJP legislature party currently has more “Congress MLAs” (16 out of 27) than dyed-in-the-wool saffronites. And more Catholic MLAs than Hindus – to highlight an uncomfortable detail for a party championing the Hindu Rashtra cause. Instead of 'Congress-Mukth' Bharath now Congress is succeeded in making RSS-Mukth BJP.

The BJP has created a sense of the ‘Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram‘ phenomenon had created an alarming level of political instability. Governments fell frequently as elected representatives exercise their ‘freedom of movement’ a little too literally.

Clearly, defected MLA's do not fully understand the law. Para 4 of the tenth schedule makes three points:

The original political party should merge with another party.
As a result, not less than two-thirds of the members of the legislature party merge with that party.
The merger becomes legally recognizable only when two-thirds of the members of the legislature party also merge with the other party.
Para 4 of the tenth schedule says that the original political party should merge with another party first. This would mean that the Congress party should merge with the BJP before these 10MLAs can merge with that party. But there is no evidence that the Congress party has merged with the BJP. Therefore, there is no legally recognizable merger in Goa. Hence they will be termed defectors and held liable to be disqualified.
But Congress is still finding its national President, while the party disintegrates in Goa before it.
