Moodbidri, May 29: In a hit and run case, a NSG commando who was grievously injured during his visit to the district on Wednesday, lost his life on Thursday May 28. The black belt commando named Shekhar Rathod (32), a native of Bagalkot district, who is said to have provided security to the likes of former deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, was crossing the road when a tipper hit him. The driver of the vehicle fled with the vehicle, not caring about the condition of the man he had just knocked down.
Reportedly, Shekhar, who wanted to visit the daughter of his elder sister, who is pursuing PU education at Alva's College here under sports quota, came in an express bus from Mangalore and alighted at a wrong bus stop in Handelu. When he was crossing the road near the Marakada Cross towards his destination, he was hit by the tipper. He was immediately admitted into a private hospital and then shifted to Mangalore hospital for advanced treatment.
As his injuries were grave in nature, he did not respond to treatments. Even though there were many on the road at the time of the accident, none noted down the registration number of the vehicle. A case has been registered in the local police station in this connection.
District superintendent of police Dr Subrahmanyeshwar Rao confirmed that Rathod was in the team that provided security to L K Advani and several other national leaders. The district police department extended help to shift the body of the commando to his native place.
