Mangaluru, Jul 9: Chief commissioner of Customs, Bengaluru Zone, A K Jyothisi inaugurated the newly renovated customs office here at Bunder Old Port on Tuesday, July 9.
Addressing the gathering, A K Jyothisi said, "This building is 130 years old. It is easier to build a building than renovating. Preserving heritage, while renovating the building, is a Herculean task. It is great to know that this building has a vast history of International trade. The renovation work is our contribution to the city of Mangaluru."
Commissioner of GST audit Bengaluru, Dr M Subramanyam said, "To renovate this old Customs office we were inspired by the spirit of Mangaluru. People of Mangaluru are well connected to the city from all parts of the world. Our predecessors have given us a lot of service and gave a good customs office, which we need to carry forward.”
Commissioner of Customs Mangaluru, Parag C Borkar said, "I have served in many places in the country. Customs offices are located at the banks of rivers where the ships enter. Now the new offices are very far. When you look at the renovated customs office, it invokes nostalgia. We know how the days were, during olden times. Now coming to this office, we can relive the same moments and we are really proud of it.”
Chief engineer SZ III CPWD Bengaluru S N Rai said, "Lot of questions arose during the renovation work of this building. What to do? How to do? Why to do? The building was in a dilapidated condition. We have faced lots of challenges during the renovation of this building.”
The Customs office building at Bunder Old Port was constructed in the year 1886, which is now renovated at a cost of Rs 89.46 lac.
Additional commissioner of Customs Mangaluru Imamuddin Ahmad welcomed the gathering and superintendent of customs Sreenath H V rendered the vote of thanks.
