Malad, Mumbai, Jul 3: Irfan Shahnawaz Khan and Gulshad Mumtaz Ali Sheikh, two friends from Malad, died of suffocation inside a Scorpio car that got stuck in a flooded subway here on Monday night. According to police, the incident took place when the victims were returning to their houses in Malad and got stuck in the waterlogged subway around 11.30 pm and could not open the doors or break the glass and suffocated to death.
Locals said that the victims drove on the road without knowing the depth of waterlog in the subway, which was reported to be around 10 feet. As the incident occurred late night, people came to know about it only by 4 am in the morning.
As per Mumbai Mirror report, Tabrej S, a friend of Irfan said, “They tried a lot to come out of the vehicle. However, their efforts went in vain. They even attempted to break the glass with the key and called many people, including friends and police control room to rescue them, but by the time help arrived it was too late. Irfan worked as a driver and it was his employer's car. He is survived by his wife and five children,” he added.
Gulshad's brother Irfan Sheikh told Mumbai Mirror that the victims died because of negligence of the authorities. “Nobody came to help. Only the local people were scrambling for help."
