An undertrial accused in rape case escapes from police custody in Goa

Margao, Jun 29: Ramchandrappa Chinna Yellappa, a 30 year old undertrial accused in the rape of a 48-year-old British woman at Palolem in Canacona, escaped from the clutches of police on Friday, when he was brought to the South Goa sessions court in Margao for hearing.

Arvind Gawas South Goa SP said Yellappa a native of Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district escaped from the toilet located inside the court premises. As per a report in TOI, Gawas told the publication, "He asked to be taken to the washroom, but as he took unusually long time to come out of the toilet, the police escorts accompanying him found that he had bolted. He jumped out of the ventilator of the toilet by bending the grills."

Yellappa has been booked by the Fatorda police and an offence has been charged against him for escaping from lawful custody. The survivor, a 48 year old British woman was on the way to her room from Canacona railway station on December 2018, when Yellappa accosted her and pushed her into a roadside field before raping her.
