Beltangady, May 19: A person named Dinesh from Shirtady, who was working as the post master of Perady post office near here, has been accused of committing irregularities to the extent of five lac rupees. A departmental inquiry was initiated about the alleged irregularities on Monday May 18. Reportedly, the department has so far been able to get hold of records to prove his involvement with irregularities worth Rs 2.5 lac. The accused reportedly has confessed to the wrongdoing and promised to reimburse the amount within six months.
Allegedly, Dinesh used to credit amounts paid by customers towards insurance premiums, recurring deposits, fixed deposits etc., into his personal account since the last about two years. He had taken charge of this post office about 30 months back. He allegedly kept with himself the pass books tendered by people, in the guise of making entries into them and when the fraud details started coming out, burnt down hundreds of pass books together. When asked, he reportedly said they were old pass books. It is also suspected that he had used fake rubber stamps of the post office to add a touch of genuineness to a few transactions.
Assistant postal superintendent Dinesh and postal supervisor Francis Goveas started investigation on Monday. Over 200 customers, who lost their money in the fraud, had come to the post office and the accused, who had been absconding since a week, was also brought to the post office. The officials asked the people to give in writing the details of the loss they suffered so that the department can make efforts to reimburse their money. One of the customers, Sumati shetty said, she had lost Rs 50,000 in the fraud, while Yogish, another customer, reportedly lost Rs 25,000.
Marody gram panchayat president Jayant Kotian and other leaders were present during the department inquiry.
