Mumbai, Jun 27: A woman has been arrested for stealing gold ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh by breaking into the flat of a female senior citizen, on June 20, by sneaking away with her keys after encouraging her to visit the society gym.
The woman arrested has been identified as 39-year-old Ruchita Sachin Tanna, was a housewife in Malad. The case was solved by the crime branch on Tuesday, who also arrested 43-year-old Dipak Sarkariya, a jeweller who has been accused of buying the stolen gold from Tanna.
The senior citizen, who is a retired banker, was traumatised after the theft, and decided not to report the incident, said the police.
As per TOI report, inspector Chimaji Adhav said, “After we learnt that the senior couple were scared to even lodge a complaint, we took them into confidence and registered an FIR of housebreaking.”
The senior citizen explained to the police that on June 20, she had gone to the society gymnasium with Tanna, after the former’s husband had gone out. Tanna had befriended the complainant during morning walks in their society. The senior couple’s children work in the US.
The police stated that Tanna had acquired the complainant’s flat keys from the counter while the complainant was performing light exercises. She entered the flat where she stole ornaments from the safe she opened.
DCP Akbar Pathan said, “She returned to the gym.” He added, “The complainant realised about the theft the next day when her husband opened the cupboard,” as per TOI report.
Pathan stated that the CCTV footage was of no help because Tanna had turned off the power. However, the police found Tanna’s movements suspicious after scanning the footage from the building CCTV cameras. The police also found out that Tanna had been arrested for a theft case in 2010.
