Tamil Nadu demands release of Cauvery water from Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (SHP)

Bengaluru, Jun 25: On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu insisted a release of total 9.19 TMC feet of water for the month of June and 31.24 TMC feet of water for July from Cauvery.

The motion was addressed by Tamil Nadu during a meeting with the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The state said that there is no possibility of opening the Mettur Dam anytime soon. The dam which was scheduled to open on June 12 will now open sometime in August. Tamil Nadu claimed that the CWMA, in its third meeting stated that Karnataka should release the prescribed quantity of water in the month of June and July to Tamil Nadu.

"Karnataka has not honoured the decision of the Authority and so directions may be issued to Karnataka. They should release the entire quantity of 9.19 TMC feet of water before June 30, 2019, in accordance with the decision of the Authority," asserted Tamil Nadu.

The state also raised objections on the initiation or even consideration of the Mekedatu Project. TN reiterated that no dam, reservoir or any structures anywhere near the Cauvery Basin by Karnataka should be constructed. It would be then a violation of the Supreme Court judgement. Accordingly nothing should be allowed without the consent of Tamil Nadu and other co-basin states.

A group of engineers from Central Water Commission were also appointed by the state to monitor the release of the water in the prescribed quantity.

With the weaken state of the monsoons, both the states are facing terrible situations. It was also reported that the inflow of water in the reservoirs has been the lowest in the past 40 years.

TN before making this demand should check what are the water levels in Karnataka dams. The inflow of water to our dams is very low due to inadequate rain.

Hence their demand in not practical at all and considering this Cauvery Water Management Authority has rejected their demand and Karnataka is bound to release water only when there is enough water levels.
