Mangaluru, Jun 25: It is vacation for mechanized boat fishing in the coast now. The country boat fishing should have started by now. However, as the traditional boat fishing is not yet started in full swing, there is a scarcity of fresh fish in the market. The price of fish that is arriving into the local market from other states has skyrocketed.
If the coastal region gets good rain, which induces small storm in the sea, then it is feast time for the traditional boat fishermen. Under such conditions, they get a big bounty of fish. However, this time around, it did not rain sufficiently till now because of which there is no small storm in the sea. For the same reason the traditional boats have not ventured into the sea for fishing which has caused alarming increase in the price of fish.
In the midst of this crisis, fish traders bring fish from other states. Popular fishes like mackerel, sardines, madangu and rebtayi are supplied from the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Their price also is too high now. Mackerel is being sold at Rs 180 per kilo, while the sardines are priced at Rs 110 per kilo.
Even the frozen fish is in great demand. Frozen mackerel is being sold at Rs 200 per kilo, disco fish at Rs 150 per kilo, kallur at Rs 200 per kilo. Big size prawns are priced at Rs 350 per packet, while the smaller variety is being sold at Rs 250.
