Dammam, Jun 25: Saudi women are considering including specific aspects in their marriage contract before entering the union. According to the law, if anytime there is a breach of such contract, it could pave the way for divorce.
The marriage contract could contain anything from a woman's right to have her own house, to hiring a maid, or to study and work after marriage.
Last year, the ban on female motorists was lifted, the condition has now made way into the marriage contract as right to own a car and driving one.
One couple who was set to get married had some of the above mentioned conditions. Majd (29), who is getting married this month shared a contract in which his 21-year-old fiancee drafted few conditions. Majd, signed off two conditions, one being right to work and the other being the right to drive after marriage. He explains that his fiancee wanted to be independent after marriage and that he was in complete agreement with her.
One of the clerics states that these contracts have made the women bolder as they do not fear to exert their rights or even decide to end their marriage when they find a breach of contract.
"In the past, society did not listen to women. Husbands would turn around and firmly say 'No’, but now they are listening to the aspirations of women," cleric Ajemi said.
