Udupi, May 16: The workers under the state's government’s 'Akshara Dasoha' scheme staged a protest in front of the office of the zilla panchayat here on Friday May 15, against the proposed privatization of the scheme and also pressing for the implementation of the recommendation of the education department to pay Rs 74 as daily wages to the workers under the scheme. After holding the protest, a memorandum was submitted to the deputy secretary of the zilla panchayat.
The protestors demanded for the implementation of a scheme to pay compensation to the workers under the scheme, in case of death or accident while on duty. They also demanded job security, separate kitchens for the scheme, equipped with safety features, payment of maternity leave and allowance to women workers and payment of monthly salary on time.
General secretary of the District Workers Union Vishwanath Rai led the protestors. Labour leaders Ramesh Mendon, Ratnavati, Sharada Byndoor, Jayant Kundapur, Dasu Bhandary and several others participated.
