Kundapur, May 7: In a heart-rending incident that occurred at Toodalli area of Yadtare village near Byndoor at around 2.30 am on Wednesday May 6, a girl who got married two weeks ago was burnt alive along with a cow and its calf.
The deceased has been identified as Sugandhi from Ellampalli, Neelavar in the district, who married Vasudev Bhandary, son of Narayan Bhandary from Toodalli village, 13 days ago.
After the family members saw flames leaping to the sky from the cattle shed, they rushed to douse the flames. However, by then the fire had spread to the heap of hay sheaves nearby. Vasudeva, whose calls to his wife went unanswered, thought that Sugandhi was hiding at home, terrified by the sight of huge fire. The flames could be extinguished only after the fire brigade personnel arrived from Bhatkal a little while later.
The charred body of Sugandhi and also of a cow and calf were found inside the shed. Two bullocks which were saved, have suffered intensive burn injuries. Vasudev Bhandary, a hard working and mild-mannered man who has lost his wife, has been devastated with the catastrophe.
Hundreds of people rushed to show sympathy to the family. Zilla panchyat president Raju Poojary, deputy superintendent of police Shashidhar, tahsildar, revenue inspector, circle inspector Kantaraj and various others visited the spot. A case has been registered at Byndoor police station.
