Sanguem residents oppose construction of IIT on ‘pristine land’

Margao, Jun 6: Under the banner of Sanguem-Cotarli-Nagvem IIT Virodhi Samiti, residents of Sanguem are opposing the proposed IIT project in Cotarli, Sanguem. The Villagers on Wednesday said they have no problem with the IIT coming up, the issue is the location chosen for its construction.

The proposed project is to be located on naturally prestige land spread over 13 lakh sq m having thick forest with abundance of wildlife and swathes which is under paddy cultivation and horticulture.

Opponents as well as proponents put forth their views at an open forum that was held in Sanguem on June 2 to discuss the project. One resident Ina Costa, highlighted the presence of natural springs and streams that will be destroyed if the proposed project comes up.

Constancio Mascarenhas, Convener of the samiti questioned the propriety of the officials in proposing the location for the IIT campus on “such a rich and fertile land which is presently under cultivation and source of livelihood of 300 families”. At the forum It was decided that a 10-member committee will be formed to study the issue and enable stakeholders to arrive at an informed decision over the project.
