Panaji, May 30: In an innovative attempt to tackle the state's garbage menace, Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday introduced "Garbage Challange". He took a pledge to treat all his wet waste at home instead of throwing it in the bin and nominated two of his ministers, Vijay Sardesai and Manohar Ajgaonkar and opposition leader Chandrakant Kavalekar to take the same pledge and nominate three people each from their side.

"It is not possible to make Goa totally garbage free. People have to participate and help the government. We will create awareness and will have this campaign for one year. If we manage to do this, then in five years, Goa will be clean and green," Sawant said.

Nominating deputy chief ministers Vijai Sardesai and Manohar Ajgaonkar, and opposition leader Chandrakant Kavalekar to do the same he said “They will also take the pledge. They have to buy the home composter and treat their waste at home. Then, they have to nominate three people and this will go on throughout the year."

After taking the pledge he said that he hopes to create sufficient awareness through the year-long exercise so that Goa will become clean and green in the future. He said the pledge would be administered to government staff, school students and other allied organisations. He also urged NGOs, social groups and others to join hands with the government to make Goa clean and green.
