Chikmagalur, Apr 13: In a significant development, the policemen from the district arrested three persons and confiscated huge cache of explosives, at a time naxal activities are gaining momentum in the district. The policemen said, they are investigating the suspected links of the people working behind the scenes to promote naxalism and claimed that with this seizure, a tragedy that was waiting to strike the district, has been averted.
In a joint operation launched in Koppa, Sringeri, N R Pura, Jayapura and Belehonnur in the district, the policemen seized 100 kgs of explosive material, ammonium mitrate, 50 gilletine sticks, 10 detonators and pamphlets containing pro-naxal literature from the house of Nazir in Kachige village of Megunda revenue division. Based on the information extracted from him, they raided the home of Hamid from Baisigadde in Heggarkodige and recovered 23 detonators, 150 kg of explosives, ammonium nitrate and 70 gilletine sticks. Manju and Afsar, who were carrying explosives within Balehonnur police station limits, were also arrested and 33 detonators, 58 gilletine sticks, 100 metres of electric wire, five kgs of explosives and ammonium nitrate were recovered.
Giving this information at a press conference held here on Sunday April 12, superintendent of police M N Nagaraj said, the accused were tacitly supporting the naxal activities. Nazir was even coaxing the villagers to join the naxal movement, he revealed. He added, that a recommendation has been sent to reward Koppa deputy superintendent of police Abdul Ahar, Sringeri circle inspector Sadanand Tippannavar, station house officer Sachin, N R Pura circle inspector D T Prabhu, Koppa circle inspector Ramachandra Nayak and other personnel who strived to unearth these activities.
