Mumbai: Cars crash head on as biker tries to cross over, six killed

Mumbai, May 11: Six people were killed and two others injured in an accident involving a car with one family travelling toward Kandivli when it collided with a Swift heading towards Gujarat while one of the car drivers tried to save a biker who was wrongly trying to cross over from one side of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway to the other at Kasa in Palghar on Friday.

The biker, Navnath Navle (25), a resident of Mokhada, pillion rider B D Jadhav (52) from Vangaon and two occupants from each car— Pratibha Shah (70) and Rakesh Shah (50) from Kandivli and Aakash Chavan (42) and Dilip Chandane (57) were killed in the accident.

The accident took place when the Polo car driver tried to avoid hitting the bike that came suddenly in the middle of the road, crossing over the highway. The Polo car, which was heading towards Kandivli, landed on the Gujarat-bound lane of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway after crashing into the biker and collided with a Swift heading towards Gujarat.

Jinal Shah (24), who was on her way with her family to their Kandivli home in the Polo car, sustained head injuries and is being treated at a Valsad hospital. Naresh Supe (45) from Jawhar also suffered injuries and is under treatment at Kasa Government Hospital.

The fellow bike rider, B D Jadhav an engineer in the state irrigation department, was thrown off the bike and landed some distance away after being hit by the car.

Police said the six bodies have been taken for autopsy and statements of the injured will be taken before a case of negligence is registered.

    The biggest issue is not braking in time. Everywhere you see people swerving to avoid pot holes, other vehicles, etc. If you go to any driving school, the brake is always under the control of the tutor & the learner never learns how to use the brake.
    It is high time that learner's are given full control of the car during the last phase of their training. The test should be made more stringent so that if the applicant fails 3 times, the driving school or the instructor has his certificate cancelled.
