Kuwait, May 6: Dragon Queens were crowned champions of the 2nd edition of Kuwait Konkan Women’s Throwball Tournament held on April 26 at American International School (AIS), Maidan Hawally, in the loving memory of Late Felix Dsouza, John Fernandes and Pascal Pinto.
A total of 7 selected Throwball teams participated in the day-long tournament. Participating teams included STARZ, Blazing Warriors, Dragon Queens, ALFA, Kuwait Friends, Kuwait Konkans-1 and Kuwait Konkans – 2.
The tournament commenced at 8.30 am with the grand opening ceremony. The chief guest, Fr Lionel Braganza (Principal of Indian English Academy School), Jerald D’souza (brother of Late Felix D’souza), Anita Fernandes (Wife of Late John Fernandes), Pramila D’souza (d/o Pascal Pinto), the event sponsors, representatives/members from various associations, Match Officials were called on to the dais and were felicitated with flowers by Ivan Mendes, the founder and team manager of Kuwait Konkans.
Fr Lionel led the prayer and congratulated Kuwait Konkans for organising the tournament and appealed to all participating teams to maintain discipline and decorum and friendship.
On behalf of all the committee members Monika Cornelio welcomed the gathering and briefed the history of Kuwait Konkans, how the team has grown today from the roots, that goes back to 12 long glorious years, which was started as ‘Christ the King’ team in 2007 and has sailed towards victory.
The team manager Ivan Mendes was felicitated with a memento and flower bouquet for his unconditional support and helping the team to grow. Vote of thanks was rendered by Rony D’Cunha. This was followed by the national anthems of Kuwait and India.
The tournament was declared open by cutting the ribbon and releasing the balloons into the air by the chief guests.
Dragon Queens, one of the top teams emerged the top position defeating all the six league matches and declared the champion of the prestigious KK Trophy and they were undefeated in the tournament winning 6 games in a row.
Kuwait Konkans-2 and Kuwait Konkans-1 secured the 1st and 2nd runners-up trophy respectively.
The best all-rounder was secured by Joyce D’souza from Dragon Queens and the best server by Enica D’Souza from Kuwait Konkans-2.
Entire event was compered by Jason Lasrado and Reema Lobo and the event of captured by Prashanth and Joyston.
The entire tournament was beautifully officiated by Ivan Dsouza and Seema Miranda.
The day was filled with challenges and fun for all.
