Panjim, May 4: Dalgado Konkani Akademi (DKA) will celebrate the 164th birth anniversary of one of the greatest sons that Goa has ever produced, Mons Sebastiao Rudolfo Dalgado by observing 'Dalgado Dis 2019' on May 8.
The function will be held at 4.00 pm at the multipurpose hall of Art & Culture department, Patto Plaza, here.
Mons Dalgado was a linguist, studied numerous languages such as Marathi, Sanskrit, Kannnada, English. When he was in Portugal he studied Arabic, Persian and German. Whilst in Rome he mastered Greek, Hebrew, Latin, French, Italian and Spanish. He did not only learn these languages for the sake of learning, but made a deep study of the various differences that existed in these languages. This academic exercise bestowed on him international acclaim.
Konkani was his native language. He did not write much in Konkani, but wrote about the language in Portuguese and other languages. He gave Konkani a new direction and through his writings proved that it was an independent language. He was also the man who gave Konkani the first Konkani-Portuguese and Portuguese Konkani dictionaries.
His other literary works include Glossario Luso-Asiatico, Influencia do Vocabulario Portuguese en Linguas Asiaticas, Florilegio dos Proverbios Concanis, etc.
Dalgado Konknni Akademi is named after this great personality in order to keep alive Mons Dalgado’s name and works among the present day generation.
Fr Luis Gomes, asst professor of Konkani at St Xaviers College Mapusa will deliver a lecture on 'Mons Sebastiao Rudolf Dalgado and Konkani language' on the occasion.
Three books namely 'Nateancho Sonvsar' written by Joyce D’Souza and 'Conductor Pil’luk Mar' and 'Mhojea Bannavllechim Adlim Kazaram' written by Cirilo D Fernandes will also be released by the chief guest, Premanand Lotlikar, former president of DKA. DKA president, Tomazinho Cardozo will preside over the function. DKA secretary Vincy Quadros and treasurer Celso Fernandes will also grace the occasion.
The function is open to the public. Konkani lovers are requested to attend the function in large numbers.
