Daijiworld Media Network - Ponda

Ponda, May 3: With water levels in the Opa river basin dipping alarmingly this summer, the water division of the public works department (PWD) has decided to regulate the supply by 30%.

The situation could become critical if there are no monsoon showers within the fortnight. The normal water level at Opa is 2.5 m, but on Thursday the level touched 2 m. The Opa river caters to Tiswadi taluka, including Panaji, Bambolim, Taleigao, Ribandar and the whole of Ponda, PWD official said.

Along with Kalem River that flows from Sanguem, Khandepar River, originates in Karnataka and flows through the Dudhsagar waterfalls and is the main source of the Opa water plant. When the level of water at the Opa basin goes down, it receives water from Selaulim dam, the Ganjem water treatment plant and the mining pits on the banks of the Opa and its tributaries.
