Udupi, Mar 22: Fishermen from Malpe and their 28 boats, who had been arrested off the coast of Devgad in Maharashtra on Wednesday March 18 while fishing, were released after a long negotiation.
They were confined by the local fishermen in Devgad for allegedly fishing in the beach area. The negotiation was led by the Fishermen’s Action Committee president Pramod Madhwaraj in the presence of officials of the department of port, tahasildar and fisheries department in Maharashtra.
Hiriyanna T Kidiyoor, president, Malpe Fishermen’s Association, alleged that those arrested were assaulted and their boats were damaged.
