Mangalore, Mar 3: An open Kabaddi tournament was held recently at Bajpe, near here, jointly by Muranagar Friends Club, Bajpe, and Dakshina Kannada District Amateur Kabaddi Association. Thirteen men’s teams and four women’s teams participated.
Moodbidri MLA K Abayachandra Jain, former city mayor Ganesh Hosabettu, Mumbai lawyer Subash Shetty, Bajpe Academy of Basic Education Trust chairman B M Zakaria, Bajpe gram panchayat president Harinakshi, Bajpe gram panchayat former president Surendra Pergade, former national Kabaddi player and Bajpe Muranagar Friends Club chairman Robert Francis D’Souza, executive president Jaggesh Shetty, and secretary Dennis D’Souza, were present during the inauguration.
Bajpe Vyavasaya Seva Sahakari Bank chief manager Ratnakar Shetty, former zilla panchayat member Rolphy D’Costa, zilla panchayat member Victoria D’Cunha and entrepreneur Vishwanath Shetty were also present during the prize distribution ceremony, along with the dignitaries.
Former national Kabaddi player Krishnamurti was felicitated on the occasion.
Under the men’s division, Sri Kenjar team bagged the first place and was awarded a trophy and Rs 10,000 in cash, while Navachetan team, Bajpe, bagged the second place and was awarded a trophy and Rs 6,000 in cash. R K C team, Kuttar, bagged the third place and was awarded a trophy and Rs 2,000 in cash.
Navachetan Kabaddi player Yadav was adjudged ‘best rider’ while Sri Devi Kenjar player Munna was adjudged ‘best catcher’. Sri Devi Kenjar player Sukesh Bhandary was adjudged best ‘all-rounder’.
In the women’s category, Alvas A team bagged the first place and was awarded a trophy and Rs 5,000 cash, while Alvas B team bagged the second place and was awarded a trophy and Rs 3,000 in cash. Navachetan Bajpe team bagged the third place and was awarded a trophy and Rs 1,000 in cash. Prema Siddi was adjudged ‘best rider’ while Sumita was ‘best catcher’ and Poornima the best ‘all-rounder’.
The prizes were distributed to the winners. Over 4,000 spectators were present on the occasion. The live band entertained the spectators with the music from Bollywood hits.
