Panaji: Crackdown on drunk driving till March 11

Panaji, Mar 5 (TOI): Goa police plans to come down heavily on drunk drivers over the next few days with a special drive being undertaken till March 11. DySP Dharmesh Angle has sent a circular to all police stations to deploy sufficient staff along with alcometers for the drive. “Police inspectors are to compile the traffic cell wise details of cases booked and put up for the perusal of superiors,” Angle said in the wireless message.

Interestingly, police plans to crack down on drunken driving between 11am and 1am. Police personnel will have to be deployed on all shifts to crack down on errant drivers.

As per Goa police norms, anyone found driving a vehicle with their blood alcohol exceeding 30mg per 100ml of blood, detected in a test, would be punished. Earlier in November, police had logged an increase of over 50% in cases of drunk driving.

As per official statistics, the traffic cell had booked 4,920 such cases by November 2018, a 56% jump when compared to the 2,760 cases the police registered during the same period in 2017.
