Udupi, Feb 9: The Kaup police have succeeded in unearthing a large-scale beef distribution racket from near Manipur village on the morning of Sunday February 8. They arrested six accused and recovered a quintal of beef, 16 cow pelts, a Maruti Zen car, four knives, two sabres, two cows which were about to be slaughtered and a calf.
The arrested persons have been identified as M K Mohammed (52), Hassan (30), Hamza (20), Shamoon (19), Ibrahim (32), all residents of Mallar Keri House, while the other arrested, Mohammed Shariff (52) is from Katpady Subhasnagar.
On the basis of reliable information collected by them, Kaup police station-in-charge Joy Antony and his assistants waited in front of the Manipura church on Sunday morning. Upon intercepting a Maruti Zen car which came that way, they found that five accused in the car were transporting about 80 kgs of beef in the car to Manipur from Katpady. Those in the car confessed that they were taking the beef for being supplied to different hotels, and that they got the beef from the house of Mohammed Shariff from Katpady Subhasnagar, where cows were being slaughtered. The police then raided Shariff's home and took into possession 20 kgs of beef found there.
The value of the confiscated assets has been put at Rs 1.13 lac. The accused were presented in the court.
