Belagavi, Feb 21: In an incident which happened at Dhavaleshwara village in Moodlagi taluk in the district on Wednesday February 20, a person died after one of the bullets fired in the air on the occasion of temple festival there accidentally hit him.
The victim of the incident was Nijaguni Maharudrappa Angadi (42) from Dhavaleshwara village.
The annual festival of Lord Rangeshwara Swami was going on. It is customary to fire five rounds in the air when the Lord is carried in a decorated palanquin near Lord Rangeshwara temple at Holimath in the village. Accordingly, a man from Dhavaleshwara, identified as Mahadeva Bheemappa Nadagouda, fired eight bullets in the air with his revolver. The last of these bullets hit Nijaguni in his head.
Nijaguni, who suffered acute bleeding, died on the spot. A case of firing with licensed revolver was registered in Kulgod police station. District superintendent of police, Sudheer Kumar Reddy, said that the police are investigating the incident.
In the meanwhile, a pall of gloom has descended on Dhavaleshwara village, which was enjoying festive atmosphere till the joy of villagers was marred by this freak accident. The accused, Mahadeva Nadagouda is absconding. The police have launched a hunt for him.
