Mangaluru International Airport privatisation gains momentum

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 18: The process of privatising the international airport here has been gaining momentum. Reportedly, three companies including GMR have evinced interest in managing this airport on contract basis.

Cochin International Airport Ltd which manages Kochi airport has participated in the bid to manage and develop this airport on contract basis. Highly placed sources said that bids relating to privatisation of six airports in India have been opened from February 14 onward, and so far, three entities have shown interest in this airport. GMR Group, which is a major player in the field and which has the experience of managing large airports like New Delhi and Hyderabad, has also taken part in the bidding process. Reportedly Adani Enterprises, a prestigious company, is another bidder to have expressed its interest in running this airport.

The interest shown by Cochin International Airport Ltd in running the airport located in a neighbouring state has surprised many. Kochi happens to be the biggest airport in Kerala, and out of four international airports in Kerala, Kannur airport had recently been inaugurated, and this airport has all the makings of competing with the airport here in sharing the clientele because of its close proximity.

It is learnt that names of successful bidders will be made known on February 26. People here are eager to know who will manage this airport.

We Tulu Nadu people don't want Gujarati based 'Adani's having 'Zero experience' managing our airport operations.
Cochin International Airport Ltd, GMR, Mumbai handlers are a wise choice. They have experience and managing skills.
But whomsoever manage this airport we the air travelers wanted a complete overhaul of staff. We are fed up with pat checking for zero baggage passengers. We can't wait for one our with single landing when the similar capacity airport is much faster in service and efficiency.
The new complaint of Passport tampering is a serious issue. Though Airport Director denies this is not the first time we are hearing it.
Like many passengers, my overhaul experience is worst. We need a staff who is smiling having courtesy and away from the communal mindset when it comes to professional.
    Mangalore Airport lacks in all.

One good thing is services would be super efficient and employees would be accountable. Currently the staff are very lethargic, bakra hunting, etc. But yeah we will have expats from other states working as well. So get ready to learn malayalam , Mallus are flocking to Mlroe for jobs!

Why BJP Govt led by Modi wants to privatize this airport which has been already developed to the full extent by Airports Authority of India?

How much commission is BJP leaders making in this deal? Does the privatization of Airport lead to increased user charges like it happened in other places across India?

If the user fee is going to increase this is nothing but a loot from the passengers going through this airport.

Mangalore airport is not a Transit Hub and no one will expects to see swanky restaurants or shopping spaces in this airport. If the privatization leads to increase in user fee, we all Mangaloreans should oppose this move by Govt.

Who told you that AAI has developed this airport to full potential?... And yes, you can see more swanky restaurants coming in here and infrastructure will be upgraded to a greater level. No doubt about it. I don't know how efficient is Adani group or cochin airport limited is, but GMR will do some justice. But hope that bidding company doesn't go bankrupt before completion of development like Navayuga company.

If the contract is given to Cochin International Airports Ltd, they will deliberately downgrade the Mangalore airport so that the Kerala airports gain the upper hand.
