Manipal, Feb 17: Binu Peter, Ibrahim, Eunice and Archana bagged first prize in mega ‘Manipal Marathon 2019’ jointly organized by Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Udupi district Amateur athletics association.
ICICI south head, Viral Rupani flagged off half Manipal marathon event at Manipal Edu building here on Sunday, February 17 and prize distribution was held at KMC Greens Manipal.
The winners secured prizes in 21K Mahe male, 21K open male category, 21K Mahe female and 21K open female category respectively. The first second and third finishers received Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 15,000.
H S Ballal, pro chancellor, MAHE, Manipal speaking at the prize distribution ceremony said, “We will change the figure of this event next year. We will do it in bigger way and more popular. We will keep our words. Apart from the academic activities, participating in sports and games is very important. It will help building overall personality and to keep physical and mental fitness as well. We are happy that MAHE students and staff have used these facilities. More and more youngsters need to participate in the event.”
Another guest Cdr Abhilash Tomy, KC, NM Indian Navy congratulated all for organizing the event successfully.
District superintendent of police Lakshman Nimbargi addressing the gathering said, “This was the third marathon I have participated. The number of marathon is increasing. Let us have yearly two marathons, one in the beginning of the year and another at the end of the year. Health is wealth. Fitness is very important. It will impact on society and growth of the country. Let us participate in large number in coming days.
Dr Vinod Bhat, vice chancellor, MAHE Manipal announced the date of marathon to be held on Sunday, February 9 next year.
More than 10,000 people participated in the event enthusiastically. It was great fun and everyone enjoyed the lush greens and the carnival presented by Volunteer Services organization (VSO). Sponsors for the event were Syndicate Bank, powered by ICICI bank and Adani. Over 12 athletes from Kenya and 2 from Germany also participated.
The theme for this year’s marathon was ‘Mental Health Awareness’. Mental health diseases affect people of all age groups and from all walks of life, but university students are most vulnerable to fall prey to various diseases.
H S Ballal handed over Rs 15,000 cheque to Roopa Ballal as a token of support. She teaches for the destitute and poor children. She also makes them involved in sports, yoga and other activities.
MLA Udupi and president of organising committee Raghupati Bhat welcomed and Ashok Adyanthya, president of UDAAA proposed vote of thanks.

The event was held on four categories - 3 km fun run, 5 km, 10 km and 21 km. There were four categories in 21 km and 10 km - open, 35-55 years, above 56 years and for Mahe staff and students. There were three categories in 5 km race - open, 35-55 years and above 56 years.
