Udupi, Feb 15: Deputy commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati asked officials to hold programmes to create awareness on use of EVM and VV pat in the district.

She was speaking in a seminar on use of EVM and VV pat for sector officials, booth officials, PDOs, revenue department staff, BLOs and representatives of political parties at Rajatadri Atal Bihari Vajpayee auditorium on Friday.

She asked officials to create awareness about the machines among new voters, visit all the polling booths, hold campaigns through hand bills, know reasons for low turnouts in some polling booths and take action to increase their numbers.

She asked officials to work in coordination to strengthen the democratic system.

District sweep committee president and Udupi zilla panchayat chief executive Sindhu B Roopesh said that a time table is being prepared to hold demonstrations in all polling booth limits. “All should work to ensure that differently abled, those belonging to third gender, minorities and others cast their votes,” she said.

Byndoor education officer O R Prakash said that EVMs cannot be connected to internet or chips. “It works without electricity. Therefore, the votes in the machine will remain secure." He demonstrated the function of control unit, ballot unit, VSDU and VVpat. Additional deputy commissioner Vidyakumary and Udupi tahsildar Pradeep Kurdekar were present.
