Udupi, Feb 15: Six monkeys were found dead in different parts of the district on Thursday February 14 while the carcass of a monkey was found inside Sunkadakatte forest near Kadaba in Dakshina Kannada district. The monkey at Kadaba was found in the position of hanging from the branch of a tree.
In Udupi district, lifeless monkeys were found from Hebri, Nandalike, Hirgana,Bailoor, Siddapur and Kirimanjeshwara. Out of them, it was concluded that three were accident-related deaths. Out of the other three, postmortem of one was conducted and viscera samples were sent to laboratory for testing.
The monkey near Kadaba was found hanging from a tree by the roadside on the road between Sunkadakatte and Kombaru. It looked like the animal died three to four days back. After president of Aittoor gram panchayat, Sathish Poojary, contacted officials, entomologist, Manjula, Ajeem from health department and forest department staff arrived on the spot. After removing viscera samples for testing, the carcass of the monkey was consigned to flames.
Two more people from Kumta and a person from Honnavar got admitted into KMC Hospital Manipal on Thursday with suspected monkey fever. Nine persons from Sagar and Thirthahalli taluks of Shivamogga district, who had earlier been treated and discharged, have got re-admitted for treatment. As of now, 25 patients continue to be treated for monkey fever related complications, hospital sources stated.
