New Delhi: Government mulling closure of loss-making BSNL?

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SP)

New Delhi, Feb 14: It is gathered that the central government has asked the officials to think of closing down Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) permanently as the need for the same is felt. BSNL had been a major player in the field of telecommunications of India, but its position has been slowly eroding over the last many years.

BSNL has been facing losses year after year. It is said that telecom secretary, Aruna Sundararajan, has asked top officials to consider any feasible revival plans for BSNL including disinvestment. If no plans are feasible or promising, the BSNL top officials have been told even to consider the option of winding up BSNL, sources stated.

BSNL suffered a loss of Rs 31,287 crore in the year 2017-18. The government is also thinking of offering voluntary retirement scheme for the existing employees and disposal of land and buildings owned by the company. There is a plan to reduce the current retirement age of employees from 60 to 58 which will save Rs 3,000 crore for the government in the form of salary and emoluments.

Stop the freebies offered by National carrier-Air India and BSNL to our Political class and Babus, including political favouritism and interference, set the target like those of Private sector and see the magic, how it will turnout to be a profit making unit.

If at all these units to be closed, the current Minister holding these units to own the responsibility for bankruptcy.

Dear Mr. Rohit, this is where we stuck in our ideology, give BSNL 4G access. Welcome the ideology of Private sector but not by neglecting PUBLIC SECTOR which is asset of our NATION ! Today we are destroying our national assets, i am not concern about whichever political party goes and comes, here the concern about the GOVERNMENT ASSETS. Don't you feel this pinch ? when neglecting the nations assets ???

I think the reason for this situation is BSNL itself. People can blame the government for closing it, but what is the alternative? You will have pay tax payer's money to keep the firm alive.

I had a BSNL landline mainly used for broadband connection. I had to return it because the service was very poor and they would take at least 2 days to resolve an issue. I replaced it with a local private broad band provider who is ready to listen anytime about the problems and a WhatsApp message is enough to complain. When I was returning the landline no one bothered to ask, why I am returning.

I still used a BSNL SIM card. Though the call rates are reduced, the call quality is never improved. The 4G doesn't work everywhere. Will all these Customer satisfaction and quality issues, once can not run a business for long in the current era.

@Sudheer, totally agree with you, I came across same situation, employees of BSNL are very easy going and there's no accountability for their work. If we hand over phone the deposit that needed to be paid back took close to a year. If we ask then they didn't know why it was delayed, suppose we don't pay the bill, don't these BSNL ppl disconnect our landlines? Also these govt employees get their salaries ontime without any delays. So closure of the firm might give them their answers. But it hardly matters,as these ppl will get VRS and other benefits..so no loss for them... enjoying early retirement.

Another ploy to help the sponsors of this central government. Geo mere lal. On one side this union government says we have made Digital India and wants to close BSNL. BSNL operates in remote areas of country where telephone traffic density is poor and revenue generation is less like in Chattisgarh, eastern and north east parts of India. Private operators do not operate in these areas as it loss making proportion for them. Some of the public sector enterprises are necessary to combat monopoly especially in basic infrastructure like Roads, Railways, Banking, Telecommunications and Electricity.

It is the prime reason Ambani & Adani funded our NoMo in last election.
He would see the public sector utilities get into loss making liabilities & then sell them to his bhais.
Air Indian, HAL, BSNL & in future all banks or even Postal assets too will be for sale!
BSNL infrastructure & towers were lent to Jio with favoring Jio, now Mukesh will have monopoly over all the cellphone sectors & he will make hay after seeing all other players get insolvent & wind up like Anil Ambani.
Gujarath Model of Development is what we wanted & now we only have Gujarthi business people prospering at the cost of all other regions.
The slogan "Modi or BJP Hatao, Desh Bachao" is relevant here for this reason as well.

BSNL employs 175,000 people (2018 figures).

So we now need to add 175,000 to the list of unemployed millions.

In the past, when BSNL had the monopoly, if anyone called them for help, the lady receiving the call would say "Hold on"...

..and the called kept on "Holding on, and on, and on".

I must admit BSNL services are unsatisfactory. Further.....telecom services at coastal region is useless. Most calls get cut 3 times before you could complete the conversation! And we call ourselves top in IT!!!! Roads dug for telephone lines will never be fixed for years!! Who will take the diggers to task???

Due to Government reservation policies BSNL is filled with with old inefficient and useless but highly paid staff coupled with out dated technology .

Years of mismanagemet has lead to current state of affairs with no accountability and BSNL treats it's customers as if they are doing a great favour by providing third grade service quality.

Service quality at most of the Rural Exchanges is pathetic and there is hardly any staff available to attend to the complaints. It is high time BSNL gets privatized and gets new young technically competent staff to manage the operations. Governments apathy is main cause behind failure of BSNL.
