Madikeri, Feb 7: A merchant from Virajpet named Shafiq (40), who was a resident of that town, was hacked to death on the night of Tuesday February 5 with a machete. In connection with this incident, Rahim from Assam, Malettira Darshan and Jeevan from Kedamullur near Virajpet, stand arrested. Jeevan had earlier been sentenced for three years relating to a murder case in the past.
The murder of Shafiq was committed in relation to some financial dealings, it is said.
The killers had entered the residence of Shafiq at around 10.45 pm that day. They picked up arguments on some issues, at the end of which Shafiq was attacked with a sharp weapon as a result of which he died. Locals who heard screams from the house, alerted the police. The police rushed to Shafiq's residence and arrested the accused, who were still inside Shafiq's residence.

Shafiq, who owned a shop here, also was involved with real estate business, it is said. It is learnt that dispute over financial dealings resulted in this murder, and no one else was at home when this murder was committed.
Leaders of the community, speaking after offering prayers at Shaffi Jumma Masjid, condemned the crime in strong words and sought high level investigation into it. Deputy superintendent of police, Nagappa promised to undertake thorough investigation and bring to book all the culprits soon. About 2,000 persons took part in the funeral.
Shafiq is survived by wife and mother. Virajpet police have registered a case and begun probe.
