Pope Francis holds open-air Mass in Abu Dhabi - thousands attend

Abu Dhabi, Feb 5 (IANS): Pope Francis held an open-air Mass in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday as part of his historic trip as the first head of the Catholic Church to the Arabian Peninsula and called on Christians to promote peace in the region.

"It is my hope that you will be like this, rooted in Jesus and ready to do good to those around you. May your communities be oases of peace," the pontiff, who arrived in Abu Dhabi on Sunday on a three-day trip, told over 180,000 worshippers, mostly migrants, at the Zayed Sports City Stadium.

"It is most certainly not easy for you to live far from home, missing the affection of your loved ones, and perhaps also feeling uncertainty about the future," Efe news quoted the Pope as saying.

"But the Lord is faithful and does not abandon his people."

The Pope said he came to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to thank the Christians for "the way in which you live the Gospel we heard.

On Monday, the pontiff called for an end to war, injustice and inequality as he addressed hundreds of representatives from different faiths at an inter-religious meeting, among them Ahmed al-Tayyeb, Egypt's Grand Imam of al-Azhar, the world's largest Sunni Islamic centre of learning.

Highlighting conflicts in regions such as Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Libya, the pontiff said: "God is with those who seek peace."

The Pope's visit to the UAE is to highlight the little-known Catholic community in the nation.

The Emirati government has allocated its Christian population land and churches where they can practice their faith.

Peace is needed at this hour to this world. So also one has to spread and share this peace to the families and the world as all these great religions teach us to practice and all saw this is a good example for this by Pope visiting to UAE and. Live in peace as brothers and sisters wherever one may be. We appreciate the goodwill and gesture shown by the great rulers of UAE. A histoircal moment for people of all faiths coming under one umbrella specially people working in the Country from across the Globe over 200 countries practicing with different faiths. UAE has shown the world that peace is possible only through by living in harmony and tolerence. The hospitality and welcome given is praiseworthy as before. It is good to see the two big faiths coming together with unity and love and an example to others. The human race is none but faith, hope and love and love is the greatest among all. By this our Pope Francis once again reminded us by visiting this great country UAE and understanding the need for the people - PEACE in the world.

Few decades ago, Shaikh Shuqbooth donated a piece of land for the Catholics to build a church in order to practice their faith. Since then two Popes visited India from Vatican and paid their homage to India, a land that adores and promotes secular values. Least that we imagined that the next Pope would be invited to visit Abu Dhabi, a land known for so many generous deeds towards the humanity of the world. Today, thanks be to God, all our prayers are heard by God, the Almighty, and all our long cherished hopes and aspirations have become a reality.

Thank you, your Holiness, Pope Francis, for your willingness to visit Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Your gracious visit has unified our joyful aspirations, and hopefully this auspicious event will bring continued peace and happiness throughout Abu Dhabi and beyond. It is also reliably learnt that in commemoration of this auspicious visit of His Holiness, Abu Dhabi is deciding to build a new Mosque and also a new Church. What a thrilling feeling to cherish, and what a humbling experience to move forward that good times are ahead of us, and that the Ruling family of Abu Dhabi has come forward to make a difference in this fast changing world.

Yes, there shall be showers of blessings upon UAE. They did sponsor a massive evangelism from their soil, thus they will be greatly blessed. The whole world is going to watch that in the coming days.

It was nice to see Pope in Emirates. I wish Pope advises Christian majority countries to respect other minorities also. You sould be grateful to Emirate Rulers for respecting other religions.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to be non-committal on inviting Pope Francis to the country despite requests from church leaders as sporadic violence and intimidation against Christians continue across India.

Sporadic violence happens everywhere in India, irrespective of the religion of the victim. But when the victim is a Christian , you cry foul and project it as an attack on Christians. May be this unhealthy, ultra fanaticism of some of the Indian Christians has given a wrong picture about India to The Pope, which makes him hesitant to visit India.
If I get a chance to meet The Pope, I would explain him that all Christians in India are not like Santan Mascarenhas, Kinnigoli/Mumbai, Please do visit our Country.

    Shanker
With due respect to you, please note that the sentence "Sporadic violence against Christians" is the reason given by Times of India for Modi to be hesitant to invite Pope. You say, you will invite him, very nice of you. But, in India, it is Modi who has to invite.

Yes, I have read in newspapers that owing to religious strife in India and the RSS and Hindu Fundamentalists diktat, Modi is non committal to invite Pope.

Shame on you to comment in such an irresponsible manner. Shankar, perhaps you do not understand the real meaning of "sporadic". Wake up and learn about the reality how Christians, their places of worship, institutions are persecuted despite their selfless service to the Nation...and you are writing off all the wrong doings by saying sporadic???

Mr. BJP spokesperson. Among the nations where the Christians are under attack, number 1 is North Korea and No 10 is India now. When BJP took control, it was 20, but after four years of rule, went upward to the 10th place. Nobody will take your illogical excuses about the increased persecution of the Christians in India under the BJP/RSS rule. The whole world knows that.

PM Modi started visiting the Christian nations repeatedly to bring Forign Direct Investment, but he and his party began to play the anti-Christian game plan from day one. He thought that nobody will watch that.

Pope Francis wanted to visit India too when he made the visit to Bangaladesh and Mayamnar in November 2017. Cardinal Climis of Kerala has very clearly stated that Pope Francis was sorry that the Indian Government didn't invite him where 20 million Catholic believers are living. Not only the Catholic believers, but all Christians and followers of other religions wanted to see Pope Francis.

In UAE, how many citizens as Christians? Hardly none openly. But see the magnanimity-hospitality and love displayed to Pope Francis by the rulers of UAE !

GOD who gave 120 years to Moses will give long life to Pope Francis who is now 82. He will come to India under the new administration, and the welcome parade will be another royal event of his life, welcomed by the Hindus-Muslims-Christians-Sikh-Buddhists and rest.
