Mangaluru, Feb 5: Underworld fugitive, Ravi Poojary, who hails from coastal Karnataka, and who is known to pose threats to builders and other seeking protection money, was arrested recently from the Republic of Senegal, West Africa. It has since been confirmed that his passport, which is a fake one, was got done at Mandya.
At the time Ravi Poojary was arrested from Senegal, he was holding an Indian passport issued in the name of Antony Fernandes. It is said that he also has fake passports purportedly issued in his favour by Sri Lanka and some other countries, in different names.
Reports say that during his questioning, Ravi Poojary confessed that he got fake passports done through people who have close relationship with the underworld and some others who were active in the underworld in the past. They got these passports done and sent them to him, it is said.
Ravi Poojary had become a nightmare for a large number of businessmen from Karnataka. Intelligence additional director general of police Dr Amar Kumar Pandey and assistant commissioner of police from here, Venkatesh Prasanna, were mainly instrumental in working from behind the scenes meticulously and ensuring his arrest. When he was working as inspector at the city crime branch here, Venkatesh Prasanna had succeeded in bringing several criminals who were controlling their crime syndicate from foreign destinations. Because of his honest efforts, Bannanje Raja, who had evaded arrest so far, could be trapped and brought back to India.
The officials who kept track of Ravi Poojary's movements, have now ensured that he is brought to book. Some sources claim that Ravi Poojary, who evoked a sense of fear among big industrialists and innocent citizens in the country, has been shaken by his sudden arrest and sustained questioning by the Senegal police. Perhaps because of this pressure, he has been suffering from fever. Therefore, his deportation might take a few more days, sources said.
