Mangaluru, Feb 4: Dalit leaders expressed extreme unhappiness over the issue in which three of the six people arrested in the case of raping a Dalit girl at Bengre beach have secured bail within a month of the incident.
The Dalit leaders expressed their anger in the meeting that is held every month to hear the grievance of the Dalit community at the office of the police commissioner of the city on Sunday, February 3.
Raising the issue in the meeting, Sadashiv Urwastore, Dalit leader, said, "Three of the accused in the Bengre rape case have come out on bail within a month of the incident. The victim is still in the remand home. The accused who are out on bail are roaming freely. So the suspicion on the police arises in this case as to whether they have put the proper sections of IPC while registering the complaint."

Replying to the grievance, DCP Uma Prashant said, "Bail is granted to the accused by the court. We cannot question the decision of the court. However, we will appeal about the decision of the court."
Giving his advice on the issue, Dr C B Vedamurthy of Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE) said, "The accused secure bail through lawyers. The people of the society can pressurize the lawyers not to take up the issue in favour of the accused in such cases."
