Mangaluru, Feb 3: "The central government, by taking a decision to merge Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda, has hurt the feelings of the people from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. This move has the potential of withdrawing the facilities which Vijaya Bank used to extend to its rural customers," observed former state minister, B Ramanath Rai.
He was addressing a huge protest meet organized at Mulky on Saturday February 2, opposing the merger of Vijaya Bank which will affectively obliterate the identity of this illustrious bank.
Former minister, K Amarnath Shetty, in his address, expressed the opinion that holding of protest here might not be very affective. He therefore suggested that thousands of people from here can go to Delhi and organize protest there.
Sri Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji of Sandeepani Ashram, Protest Committee president, Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, honorary president of the committee, Harikrishna Punaroor, retired senior officials of the bank like Premnath Alva, A D Poonja, G Shivaram Shetty, Sridhar Shetty, former director, Ibrahim, Prakash Rao, and Baby Kunder addressed the protesters.
Dugganna Sawant belonging to the lineage of past rulers of the region, dignitaries, Sunl Alva, N S Manohar Shetty, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Mulky Karunakar Shetty, Janardana Tonse, Shalet Pinto, Iqbal Ahmed, M B Sadashiva, Karnire Vishwanath Shetty, and a large number of others were present.
