Mangaluru, Feb 2: T R Suresh, police commissioner, has informed that criminal cases will be booked against the owners of vehicles as well the auditoriums near which the vehicles are parked on the road, obstructing traffic. In addition, recommendation will be sent to the local administration to cancel the trade licence of erring wedding halls and auditoriums.
The commissioner was answering the questions of the citizens during the police phone-in programme that was held on Friday, February 1. Many citizens complained about the traffic congestion they faced due to a programme that was organized near Unity Hall and the adjacent open ground at Kallapu near Thokkottu on the night of Wednesday, January 30. The people who attended the said wedding had parked their vehicles in an erratic manner on both sides of the national highway 66 which caused traffic block that went on till midnight.
The commissioner informed that a criminal case under section 283 of IPC has been registered against the owner of the said hall and a notice issued. “We are also looking into recommending the cancellation of trade licence of the hall by writing a letter to Ullal town municipality,” he said.
A citizen complained that Ullal police station personnel are saying that the Unity Hall area does not fall under their limits and they did not respond to the complaints of road block, the commissioner said that action would be taken against such personnel.
Complaint regarding the non-availability of pre-paid auto rickshaws at Mangaluru Central railway station during early morning and late night hours and about auto drivers charging additional fare was brought to the notice of the commissioner. In reply, the commissioner said that such instances need to be brought to the police control room.
A citizen complained about the height of the footboard in some buses, which makes senior citizens and children difficult to board and alight. The commissioner replied that information will be given to RTO to look into the matter, when the buses are taken to RTO for fitness certificate.
One of the callers mentioned the recent incident in which retired SP Mitra Heraje drove the car on the wrong side of the road in an inebriated state and said that the police officers should be a role model to the public even after retirement.
Other issues highlighted during the programme:
*Pedestrians facing difficulty in walking due to the installation of tents on foot path near Nanthoor Padavu.
*In a school in Moodbidri, the books that were meant to be distributed to the students are lying without being given to the children.
*Let the buses stop in the designated stops from the cross road that leads to the railway station near the Town Hall till the RTO office.
*Vehicles are being parked on the road itself near Babbukatte Pandith House
*Service buses are not plying during early morning and late evening on Karnad -Padupanambur stretch.
*Vehicles are being parked on road near Yenepoya Hospital at Deralakatte.
*Some distributors are collecting Rs 30 fee for delivering gas cylinders.
*Pedestrians are facing issues as vendors are blocking the foot path at Gurpur Kaikamba.
*Foot path and street lights are not available for the road on Suratkal-Bajpe -Kana stretch.
*There is no response from the number that is displayed on the city buses for any kind of grievance faced by the passengers.
*Some express buses are charging the same fare from Mangaluru to Udupi, even if the passenger boards the bus at Padubidri.
*Traffic is being blocked at S Kodi Junction of Kinnigoli as the vehicles are parked on the road near the petty shop.
This was the 104th phone-in programme. A total number of 30 calls were received.
