Mangaluru, Feb 2: District in-charge minister U T Khader visited Pavoor Uliya on Saturday, February 3 where a temporary bridge built by the residents of the island was destroyed by miscreants.

Minister reached the place within hours after the incident was reported.

The miscreants, believed to be members of sand mafia, allegedly destroyed the bridge and vehicles parked on the riverside.

The island was news after Daijiworld exposed the apathy of the government in addressing the woes of the residents. While no help was offered by the government, the residents had recently constructed the temporary bridge using their hard-earned money.

The residents had recently had raided the boats of the sand mafia and later helped the authorities to seize more boats.

This incident is termed as revenge act.

It is now said that at around 8.30 pm on Saturday night, mines and geology department officials raided the sand dockyard at Pavoor Uliya and seized 7 boats. This incident must have prompted the miscreants to destroy the bridge and damage the vehicles.

More details are awaited.

During the insurgency in North East, Khailisani in Punjab and Kashmir these incidents of destroying the civilian infrastructures are very common. This act without any insurgency is equivalent to terrorism.

I would like to request the Minister U T Khader to contact the Indian Army unit of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) who are good in building a bridge of military grade. The best solution will be a cable bridge which can take small motorable vehicles.

Since BJP is in ruling this district since 1991 for 25 long years with two ministers serving the cabinet in the center the city must have reached the zenith of development. It is unfortunate to see dilapidated condition of elected leaders own constituency even after spending Rs14,000 crores which is still unaccountable.

    Very unfortunate things...
If there is any sand which can be extracted, government should legalise things... for example fix tax of 2000/- rupees for one truck load and allow it to remove and collect revenve...
Anyway this sand will be stolen overnight and no revenue will be generated...

also villagers should have shown patience instead of directly raiding sand business... please remember sand will come back to river during next monsoon..

Sand, jelly etc is a national asset, why few persons be given permit and make money? Let govt create a Mining Co opertive society, with govt representative and local representative. Let them extract sand and sell, no cash transaction, 100% bank transaction. Local people should be given employment here, they will get pf, esi etc... surplus profit will be with society. No individual should be allowed to mine sand, jelly or stones...let all enjoy the benefits rather than, few minting crores.
