Udupi, Jan 30: Under the leadership of Karkala assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Krishnakanth, Karkala police raided a house in Manipal where a brothel was being run. The raid was conducted on the basis of complaint received during the police phone-in programme.
The arrests were made from a house in Rajeev Nagara in Badagabettu village near Manipal. A pimp was among those who were arrested.
As per information, this prostitution racket was being run by Vadiraj Ameen alias Vadi through his wife. Vadiraj was running the flesh trade in the past on his own, it is said. Because of the activities going on in this house, decent people were finding it awkward to move about through this area. Therefore, some locals had complained to the district superintendent of police (SP) about this situation during the phone-in programme.
Manipal assistant sub-inspector and a constable have been suspended for not raiding the place in spite of having information about the running of the brothel. Manipal station assistant sub-inspector, Shekhar, and constable, Suresh, were suspended by SP Laxman Nimbargi, for dereliction of duty.
The house in question belongs to a local named Asha. The raid was conducted at 7.30 pm on Monday. Asha (35), Mahesh Bhat (26) from Hebbarabettu Aroor, Deepak (30) Honakal in Albady gram panchayat, Vinay (28) from Airody, Satish (30) from Indiranagar, Chikkkamagaluru, Puneet (29) from Padumane Herga, Sachin (32) resident of Durga Saw Mill Compouind Chitpady, Dinesh (30) from Albady, Arun (25) from Indrali here and Kartik (37), a native of Tamil Nadu, were arrested.
During the raid, Rs 65,250 in cash, 22 condoms, three used condoms, Norlut - N tablets, a black plastic sachet, a coffee colour bag, a small green and white purse, a pink vanity bag, 11 cellphones, six bed sheets, and five vehicles were confiscated by the raiding party. A case about the same was registered in Manipal police station.
