Udupi, Jan 24: ‘Milagres Cup-2019’, an inter-school volleyball tournament for under-14 and under-17 boys and girls hosted by sports club of Milagres English Medium School, Kallianpur near here on January 22 was inauguarated by Bhaskar, physical education teacher, St Mary's Kannarpady by lighting the lamp.
In his inaugural address, Bhaskar said, "Milagres school is recognized at taluk, district and state level in sports. It is giving more importance to sports. I appreciate the arrangements made by the school management. We must know the stadium mannerism. If we want to be perfect (ideal) in society, we need to be thoughtful. Fitness is very important for a sportsperson. Let students of Milagres School get a chance to represent our country. Let us play volleyball with a sportive spirit."
In his blessings, Fr Lawrence D'Souza, rector and vicar of Milagres Cathedral said, "We have so much hope and expectation from this event. All cannot win. Only two teams will emerge as winner and runner-up. All are expected to participate. Participation is in itself a reward. There should not be anyone who does not want to participate for fear of not winning a prize. Winning a prize is not important. In order to be successful in life, we need to excel in our activities."
"A person, who is smart and disciplined in studies, should also excel in the field of sports. All those virtues and characters that we need in order to be successful in life, should ultimately come from the play field. Specially, the determination to win, is not only win in the field but to get good scores in other subjects also. For that, we need determination, hard work and discipline. Therefore objective and aim of a person should be participation as a true sportsperson. Many a time, people do not want to accept failure. In such a case, they may take the extreme step like committing suicide or running away from the circumstances. Fear of failure should not prevent participation in sports event," added Fr Lawrence D'Souza.
In addition, Fr Lawrence said, "A busy person will always have time, while a lazy one will not. A lazy person cannot be master or excel in any field."
Guest of honour, Owen Rodrigues, member of management committee, Sunitha Lasrado, PTA teacher and Veera D’Silva, headmistress were present on the dais.
